hEDS Joint Protection & Support Quick Sheet
Strength over stretching, real-food protein, key supplements, and knowing your genetics — what helped most, from a middle-ground hEDS patient.
This quick sheet is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. Always consult your doctor or qualified healthcare practitioner before making any changes to your health routine, diet, supplements, or treatment plan.
Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome varies vastly from person to person — some struggle with severe joint dislocation and pain from childhood, others don't know they have it until their elderly years. Speaking from a middle-ground place, here's what helped most. Many of these symptoms are reversible and manageable, and can be argued to be secondary — agitated or heightened by hEDS, not always directly caused by it.
hEDS is a multi-genetic systemic condition — there is no one gene that causes it. Multiple genetics are at play, putting stress on the system. Knowing your genetics made the biggest impact, truly, on health decisions and improvements.
Exercise & Stretching — Strength Over Stretching
- Stop overstretching — Overstretching irritates already-lax ligaments further and enables more joint instability. Focus on strength training Pilates with every stretch at 80%, core strength, and muscle building.
- No heavy weights, no HIIT — These are too hard on the joints. Instead: rowing, bicycling, stairs, and exercise bands — most in the form of Pilates. Building strength helps enormously.
- Swimming — one of the best ways to strengthen — Strengthens the body without putting any unnecessary strain anywhere.
- Walking every morning and evening — Particularly after a larger meal.
Fluid Intake & Protein
- Fluid is non-negotiable — Fluid supports muscle movements and allows blood to flow properly without overworking other areas to compensate. Also essential for detoxification.
- Real, whole-food protein — not powder — Not the polarized, highly concentrated, highly processed form that once was recognizable and is now convenience-only — carrying potential pesticides, GMOs, heavy metals, and concentrated compounds that cause inflammation. Real sources: wild-caught fish, pastured organic eggs and chicken, pastured organic turkey, wild game, pastured beef, organic whole beans and legumes.
Reduce Inflammation & Key Supplements
These are a universal need for everyone with hEDS — but always vet against your genetics.
- High omega-3 DHA and EPA — Very high quality source — not just any.
- Quercetin (quercetin acid)
- NAC (N-acetyl cysteine)
- Liposomal vitamin C
- Several forms of magnesium — A universal need — different forms support different pathways.
- P5P (B6) and riboflavin (B2)
The Genetic Component
- Multiple genetics at play — Including methylation, nutrient absorption (or lack thereof), inability to uptake vitamin C, poor processing and overproduction of iron, slow DNA repair, quicker activation response to inflammation, slow COMT, inhibited HNMT and DAO, and more.
- Know your genetics — you can't say it enough — You can't support your body even with the best nutrient if you don't know how your genetics are working — what needs support, what you're lacking, what you're overproducing or is partially blocked. No amount of guessing gets it exactly right. With EDS especially, know your genetics!
