Recipes for Winter and Cold-Busting Remedies

When cold and flu season rolls in, the medicine cabinet isn't the only place to turn. In fact, some of the most potent, fast-acting immune tonics and throat soothers are sitting right in your kitchen pantry: raw honey, garlic, ginger, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, and onions.

Here are six of our favorite time-tested winter wellness remedies — from soothing, warm broths to spicy throat syrups, herbal fire tonics, and an alkalizing green detox drink that clears congestion and supports gentle cellular cleansing.

    1. Golden Oat Milk Broth

    Golden Oat Milk Broth

This velvety, golden-hued sipping broth combines the deep nourishment of chicken bone broth with rolled oats for a silky, cream-like texture (no dairy required), infused with anti-inflammatory turmeric, ginger, sage, and healthy fats.

    Ingredients:

    • 4 cups (1 quart) homemade or organic chicken bone broth

    • 1/4 cup rolled oats (this creates the creamy, milk effect! **Instead of oats, you can substitute cooked white rice)

    • 1 teaspoon turmeric

    • 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger (or ginger powder)

    • 1 teaspoon salt (or less if your broth is already salted)

    • 1 tablespoon raw honey

    • 1 sprig rosemary

    • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

    • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

    • Pinch of cayenne pepper

    • 1 tablespoon fat of choice: coconut oil, grass-fed butter, or ghee

    Instructions:

    1. Add all ingredients together into a medium saucepan or pot.

    2. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat so the oats soften and release their starches.

    3. Using an immersion blender (or carefully transferring to a countertop blender), blend everything until the broth is completely smooth, creamy, and foamy on top.

    4. Strain through a fine mesh strainer directly into your favorite mug.

    5. Taste and adjust with a touch more honey for sweetness or salt if desired. Sip warm while wrapping both hands around the mug!

    2. Homemade Traditional Fire Cider

    Homemade Fire Cider Tonic

Fire Cider is the classic folk remedy loved by herbalists for decades. A fiery, pungent infusion of raw apple cider vinegar, horseradish, garlic, ginger, peppers, citrus, and spices that stokes your internal digestive fire, kicks mucus, and fortifies your immune defenses.

    Ingredients:

    • 1/2 cup peeled and diced horseradish (if unavailable, you can omit)

    • 1/2 cup peeled and diced fresh garlic

    • 1/2 cup peeled and diced onion

    • 1/4 cup peeled and diced fresh ginger

    • 1/4 cup cranberries (optional, adds color and vitamin C)

    • 1/2 cup chopped fresh apple

    • 1/4 cup peeled and diced fresh turmeric (or 1 tablespoon dry powder)

    • 1 habanero chile or jalapeño pepper, split in half lengthwise

    • 1 fresh orange, sliced into thin quarters

    • 1/2 fresh lemon, sliced into thin quarters

    • 2–3 cinnamon sticks

    • 2–3 sprigs fresh rosemary (optional)

    • 2–3 sprigs fresh thyme (optional)

    • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

    • 3–4 cups raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar (at least 5% acidity, like Bragg's)

    • 1/4 cup raw honey, or more to taste

    Instructions:

    1. Neatly arrange all prepared vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices into two clean 1-quart glass mason jars.

    2. Pour the raw apple cider vinegar over the ingredients, ensuring everything is completely submerged with no air pockets trapped.

    3. Cap the jar. Chef's Tip: If using a metal lid, place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper between the jar and the lid to prevent the vinegar acid from corroding the metal.

    4. Shake well. Store the jars in a cool, dark cupboard for 3 to 6 weeks, shaking daily (or whenever you walk past the pantry).

    5. When ready, strain the liquid through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer into a clean glass jar, pressing firmly on the solids to extract every drop of liquid gold.

    6. Stir in raw honey to taste. Store in the refrigerator and enjoy 1–2 tablespoons daily as a shot, or mix into warm water with honey whenever you feel a tickle in your throat. Keeps well for up to a year!

    3. Fermented Garlic Honey

    Fermented Garlic Honey

Literally two ingredients — raw honey and organic garlic cloves. Through natural lacto-fermentation, the honey pulls moisture from the garlic, creating an acidic, enzyme-rich umami syrup while turning the garlic cloves into soft, sweet, chewy amber candies without the sharp burn. Pop a whole clove when you feel a cold coming on!

    Ingredients:

    • 4 heads of organic garlic (about 10 oz peeled cloves)

    • 16–20 oz raw, unfiltered honey (raw is essential for active beneficial yeasts and enzymes)

    Instructions:

    1. Place peeled garlic cloves into a clean glass jar.

    2. Pour raw honey over the garlic until cloves are completely covered, leaving an inch of headspace at the top.

    3. Close the lid loosely and store on your counter at room temperature.

    4. "Burp" the jar daily for the first week to release carbon dioxide gas produced during fermentation.

    5. Ready to use after 2 weeks, and only gets better with time! Store at room temperature or in the fridge for months to years.

    4. Red Onion Tonic for Sore Throats

    Warm Red Onion Throat Tonic

A beloved traditional folk remedy that has gone viral on social media for one simple reason: it works wonders on stubborn sore throats and barking coughs. Red onions are exceptionally rich in quercetin (a natural bioflavonoid and mast cell stabilizer) and sulfur compounds. Lightly simmering them extracts these soothing compounds into the water, while raw honey coats inflamed throat tissue and raw apple cider vinegar cuts through mucus.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 medium organic red onion, sliced into rings or wedges (leave clean skins on for extra quercetin!)

    • 2 cups filtered water

    • 2 tablespoons raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with "the mother")

    • 2 tablespoons raw honey (adjust to taste)

    • Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon

    • Optional: a 1-inch slice of fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick for extra warmth

    Instructions:

    1. Place the sliced red onion (and ginger/cinnamon if using) in a small pot with 2 cups of water.

    2. Bring to a gentle boil, then immediately turn the heat down to low. Simmer gently for 10 to 12 minutes until the liquid takes on a soft pink-amber hue and the onion softens.

    3. Remove from heat and let cool until comfortably warm (not scalding, so you don't destroy the delicate enzymes in raw honey).

    4. Strain the onions out through a fine mesh strainer into a large mug or glass jar.

    5. Stir in the raw apple cider vinegar, fresh lemon juice, and raw honey until dissolved.

    6. Sip warm throughout the day, or gargle and swallow a few tablespoons every couple of hours when your throat feels raw.

    5. The "Amish Natural Benadryl" Blended Shot

    Amish Natural Wellness Shot

Often nicknamed "Amish Benadryl" or "Nature's Amoxicillin" across homesteading communities, this is an intensely potent, fiery blended tonic designed to open airways, calm histamine responses, and give your immune system an immediate jolt. It blends whole fresh ingredients together in a high-speed blender so you get every bit of the fibrous medicinal plants.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 whole fresh lemon, peeled (or juice of 2 whole lemons)

    • 3–4 fresh garlic cloves, peeled

    • 2-inch knob of fresh ginger root, washed and sliced

    • 1-inch knob of fresh turmeric root (or 1 teaspoon ground turmeric)

    • 1/3 cup raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar

    • 1/4 cup raw honey (locally sourced raw honey is ideal for histamine and pollen support)

    • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or a pinch to your heat tolerance)

    • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (enhances turmeric absorption by up to 2000%)

    • 1/4 cup filtered water (or fresh pineapple juice — bromelain in pineapple provides powerful natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory support!)

    Instructions:

    1. Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender.

    2. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds until completely liquified and smooth.

    3. Pour into a clean glass mason jar. You can strain it through a fine mesh sieve if you prefer a smooth syrup, or keep the pulp for maximum medicinal potency.

    4. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 weeks. Shake well before every use, as natural separation will occur.

How to Take: Take 1 to 2 tablespoons as a wellness shot at the first sign of congestion, seasonal histamine flares, or a tickle in the throat. You can also dilute 1 tablespoon into a mug of warm water with extra honey for a soothing, spicy tea.

    6. Daily Green Detox Drink & Wellness Shots

    Green Detox Drink in Jars

A vibrant, alkalizing whole-plant green drink designed to support gentle daily liver drainage, hydration, and cellular detox. Blending whole citrus with celery, parsley, ginger, raw apple cider vinegar, and mineral salt delivers a concentrated dose of potassium, bioflavonoids, and enzymes without stripping away the beneficial fiber.

    Ingredients:

    • 5 stalks celery, chopped

    • 1 thumb ginger, peeled

    • 1 cup chopped parsley, stems removed

    • 1 cup chopped celery (or extra celery greens)

    • 1 whole lime, quartered

    • 1 whole lemon, quartered

    • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (ACV)

    • 1 teaspoon salt (mineral or sea salt)

    Directions:

    1. Place all ingredients into a Vitamix or high-speed blender.

    2. Add enough water to cover everything.

    3. Turn on and blend until very smooth, like juice.

    4. With a sieve, strain out some of the pulp — but make sure to keep some for added fiber benefits!

    5. Pour into juice or shot glasses and seal tightly.

    6. Place in the back of the fridge and use within a week. Chef's Tip: These can alternatively be frozen in large ice cube trays and popped into a glass of water whenever you need a quick detox boost!

Which remedy is right for you?

    • For a scratchy, inflamed sore throat: Reach for the Warm Red Onion Tonic or a spoonful of Fermented Garlic Honey.

    • For chest congestion & coughing fits: Take a tablespoon of Fire Cider or the Amish Blended Shot to cut mucus immediately.

    • For gentle daily cleansing & hydration: Drink a shot or glass of the Green Detox Drink to flush stagnation and nourish with electrolytes.

    • For fatigue, chills & body aches: Sip a warm mug of Golden Oat Milk Broth to nourish your cells and calm systemic inflammation.

Remember to listen to your body, rest generously, stay hydrated, and give your immune system the time and fuel it needs to do what it was designed to do.
